We want to take our dogs on a weekday, three- or four-day road trip up to the snow while it's there. We're pondering the Sierra from Yosemite north, and the Cascades from Lassen to Shasta. Doesn't have to be total high-Sierra experience, upper foothills are fine. We just need a place where our two dogs are welcome in the room with us, that we can get to without a Toyota Landcruiser equipped with spiked chains and survival gear.

Ideas? Suggestions? Cabins that might be free on a couple of weeks' notice?

I have no idea about the cabins, but I would guess the mild weather has motivated people to reserve any available cabins.

I'm not sure of how high the snow is, but I'm going to take a guess that you will have to drive up to about 5000 feet. The last good storm had a very warm warm-sector and brought the rain up to 7000 ft. The snow level came back down to around 3000 feet after the front passed, but there wasn't much precipitation behind the front.

How about Hwy 70 from Oroville to Hwy 89, south to Truckee? Or, I-80 to Hwy 49. Auburn, north to Grass Valley, then into Downieville.
